I graduated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a Bachelor's degree in 1966, majored in woodcut. As a member of China Fine Art Artist Association, my work has been shown in various exhibitions and publications from China throughout the years. My wife and I moved here in Georgia a few years ago. We had the opportunity to visit some of the galleries in Atlanta and were impressed by the flourished contemporary art forms here. Chinese art students from the 60s as I was, were heavily influenced by the Russian romantic expressionism.
Growing up in Shanghai, China, I developed a love for boats and water and it can be seen throughout my work. After school, I continued studying art and further explored other art forms, such as water color, Chinese ink brush and Chinese calligraphy. I have broken tradition from the conventional techniques and colors of Chinese in brush painting, by adding more vibrant colors in them, and have formed a style of my own. I also integrated sketching techniques into my watercolor and ink brush pieces, and recently oil paintings as well, with delightful results.
Bamboo is another recurring subject in my pieces as it's among my favorites. In China, bamboo often symbolizes peace and safety. It also symbolizes nobility and purity against corruption and cowardice. One of my bamboo pieces was acquired by one of the biggest news agencies in China.
In addition to paintings, calligraphy is my forte and favorite. I also served for more than twenty years as the art editor for Guangdong Pictorial, a Chinese publication, and has edited art for additional books and printed materials.
